We seem unable to succeed in navigating the ever-changing business and technology landscape. And meanwhile, most change efforts are adding to the very uncertainty we tried to mitigate. The result: the workplace is no nearer to where we would like it to be.
Now, Generative AI introduces unprecedented levels of disruption. Few of us have any idea how to harness and realize the possibilities they harbor. Rapid technological advancements are exacerbating these issues, leading to fear, stress and a reduction in creative capacity.
How can we navigate these new levels of disruption?
Doubling down on execution of our business strategy alone won’t cut it: Organizations are are ill-equipped to realize those strategies anyways.
In their book The Balanced Scorecard, authors David Norton and Robert Kaplan note that 90% percent of organizations fail to execute their strategies successfully. Why?
“Companies fail or fall short of their potential not because of bad strategies, but because of a failure to implement good ones.”
Leaders are overwhelmed with the day-to-day fires of delivery. Time is oversubscribed and effort is focussed on the here and now, with Strategy usually a poor second to successful project execution. It is estimated that over 50% of capacity is lost on being unable to focus on effectively aligning and deploying strategy.
What’s needed is to be able to align and re-align to the effect that we can make decisions and take responsible action at any give moment.
To do this we need a different quality of sensemaking: Our collective ability to understand, and execute in the face of the ever-changing conditions to which our strategies are a calculated response.

Each of these dimensions is strengthened by the development of the other dimensions. They’re like the legs of a stool: you really need all three.
